    Compression or in this particular case zipping of files can reduce the file size significantly. Zipped XML file can take only about 10% of the original file size. This reduces the transfer time for example in case of uploading a file to a web page.

    Zipping in Windows

    In Windows (XP/Vista/7) environment zipping can be done by right clicking the file and selecting "Send To" and then "Compressed (zipped) Folder" - see the picture below.
